KMP 1 is widely used as a name for Kanban System Design, or KSD. The label creates a predictable misunderstanding: learners assume they will pass a Level 1 exam and immediately receive the full Kanban Management Professional credential. That is not how the published Kanban University path works.

Who is eligible for KMP 1?
Kanban System Design is designed as an entry point into the management-professional path. You do not need to hold TKP, Scrum Master or project-management certification first. Prior exposure to real workflow problems is more useful than a badge.

What happens to the exam?
Kanban University awards credentials through completion of the relevant authorized courses rather than presenting KMP 1 as a public self-study exam. Learners should still expect active participation and should confirm the trainer's class-completion requirements before enrolling.
Do not confuse course completion with passive attendance. KSD involves system-design reasoning: understanding demand, identifying services, visualizing workflow, defining policies, managing work in progress and designing feedback appropriate to the context.

The official KMP credential page states that the journey starts with Kanban System Design. To earn the KMP credential, learners then complete either Kanban Systems Improvement for the service-delivery route or Kanban for Design and Innovation for the product-delivery route.

KSI or KDI after KMP 1?
Choose KSI for service-delivery improvement
KSI is the natural route when you already have a delivery system and need to improve flow, manage variability, use feedback cadences and evolve the system across a wider service context.
Choose KDI for upstream product work
KDI fits product discovery and innovation environments where incoming options, selection, commitment and the connection between upstream and downstream work need stronger design.
What to bring into the class
- A service you can describe from request to delivery.
- Two or three work-item types that behave differently.
- Examples of where work waits or becomes blocked.
- An intake or priority decision that currently depends on private judgment.
- A customer expectation the team discusses but has not made explicit.
How to evaluate a KMP 1 provider
Ask whether the trainer is authorized for the course and whether the class is registered through the appropriate Kanban University process. Confirm the certificate, schedule, delivery format, taxes, cancellation terms and what happens if you miss required learning time.
Then ask a harder question: how much of the class is spent applying STATIK and system-design thinking to realistic services? A credible KSD class should help you reason about a service, not simply recreate a familiar board in another tool.
The enrolment decision
KMP 1 is a good next step when your work suffers from excessive WIP, hidden queues, unstable priorities, weak policies or poor predictability. If you only need a simple personal task board, the course is more than you need. If you are responsible for a service and must improve how demand becomes delivery, the learning has a clear home.
