The role and the starting problem
Representative role
A Scrum Master who solves team problems before the team has examined them
The Scrum Master is trusted for quick answers, but team members wait for direction and repeat the same dependency and ownership problems.
How the course work applies
- Contract around the topic, desired outcome, time, and confidentiality.
- Separate coaching from mentoring, teaching, and facilitation.
- Use observation and questions before offering advice.
Artifacts that show applied learning
Attendance alone does not demonstrate workplace transfer. These work products make the reasoning, choices, and follow-up visible.
- Coaching agreement
- Conversation reflection log
- Stance selection record
- Follow-up commitment
Evidence to review
- Actions owned by the coachee
- Questions before advice
- Repeated issues examined at system level
- Follow-up commitments completed
A 30-day transfer plan
- Week 1: record when advice is given without an explicit request.
- Week 2: practice a short coaching contract and one listening technique.
- Week 3: request feedback on presence, questions, and stance.
- Week 4: review two conversations and choose one behavior to retain.
