PI Planning Simulation Workshop: Agenda, Exercises and Deliverables

A PI Planning simulation workshop should do more than explain the agenda. Learners need to practise the decisions, conversations, dependencies, risks, and confidence signals that make PI Planning useful.

The AgileSeekers PI Planning training is strongest when participants leave with a working mental model of the event and a checklist they can reuse before their next Program Increment.

Who should attend

  • Scrum Masters preparing teams for PI Planning.
  • Release Train Engineers and aspiring RTEs.
  • Product Owners and Product Managers involved in feature readiness.
  • Business Owners who need to make trade-offs during planning.
  • Agile Coaches supporting ART readiness.

The deliverables matter more than the slides

A useful simulation produces artifacts: draft objectives, dependency map, ROAM decisions, readiness checklist, facilitation notes, and improvement backlog. Without deliverables, participants may understand the ceremony but still struggle when real uncertainty appears.

Common anti-patterns to practise against

  • Teams arrive without refined features or capacity clarity.
  • Business Owners give opening speeches but disappear during trade-offs.
  • Dependencies are listed but not owned.
  • Risks are recorded without action or review.
  • The confidence vote becomes theatre because concerns are punished.

Corporate training version

For a corporate workshop, use the organisation's anonymised structure: number of teams, product area, planning cadence, decision owners, and dependency types. The goal is not to copy a textbook ART; it is to practise the decisions your people actually face.
