An ICP-ACC certificate can help a recruiter recognise your learning, but an interview usually tests judgment. Can you explain when you coached instead of mentored? Can you describe conflict without blaming a person? Can you show that the team gained capability rather than becoming dependent on you? Those answers require evidence, not a glossary.
Use the AgileSeekers ICP-ACC course to develop and practise the underlying skills. Then build a portfolio that protects confidentiality and shows how you thought. The credential should open the conversation; the evidence should make your capability credible.
Eight interview questions worth rehearsing
- Tell me about a time you chose coaching rather than mentoring or teaching.
- How do you contract when a manager sponsors coaching for a team?
- What do you do when the team asks you to make its decision?
- Describe conflict you helped a team work through.
- How do you coach when an organisational constraint sits outside the team's control?
- What feedback have you received about your coaching, and what changed afterward?
- How do you handle confidentiality when you coach team members and the team?
- How do you know whether your coaching is useful?
Answer with decision evidence, not hero stories
| Answer element | What to include | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Context | Enough system and role detail to understand the choice | Identifiable client or employer information |
| Contract | Client, sponsor, purpose, boundary and authority | Claiming permission was obvious |
| Observation | Behaviour or work evidence available at the time | Retrospective mind-reading |
| Choice | Why you coached, facilitated, mentored, taught or escalated | Calling every intervention coaching |
| Impact | What changed and what remains uncertain | Taking sole credit for team outcomes |
| Learning | Feedback, mistake and next experiment | A flawless expert persona |
Build four small portfolio artifacts
A coaching agreement template
Show purpose, roles, confidentiality, success evidence, review and exit. Use fictional or fully anonymised details.
A stance decision map
Take one situation and explain when coaching, mentoring, teaching, facilitation or direct leadership would be appropriate.
A team observation and experiment
Describe an observable interaction pattern, how the team interpreted it, the experiment it chose and what was learned. Remove names and commercially sensitive metrics.
A feedback-to-practice note
Show a specific piece of feedback, the behaviour you tested and what happened in the next attempt. This demonstrates self-awareness more convincingly than saying you have a growth mindset.
Be precise about what ICP-ACC proves
ICAgile positions ICP-ACC as a knowledge-based certification in the Agile Team Coaching track. Do not present it as an expert-level designation, ICF credential or proof that you led an enterprise transformation. Accuracy signals the ethical judgment employers should want from a coach.
Questions a strong candidate can ask the employer
- Who is the coaching client, and who sponsors the work?
- What decision authority will the role hold?
- How are confidentiality and performance management separated?
- Which system constraints can leaders change when coaching surfaces them?
- How will the organisation evaluate coaching without rewarding dependency or theatre?
These questions reveal whether the role is coaching, delivery management, framework implementation or a mixture. A job title cannot answer that.
Before the interview, use the 30-day practice plan to collect recent evidence and the Agile coaching levels guide to describe the credential at the right level.
