CSM, PSM II, ICP-ACC and the AgileSeekers Expert Scrum Master program solve different problems. Comparing them as four versions of the same Scrum Master certificate produces a poor decision.
Start with the result you need. One path establishes Scrum foundations, one validates advanced Scrum knowledge through an assessment, one develops Agile coaching capability, and one combines applied Scrum Master practice, AI use and portfolio work.
Four paths, four different contracts
| Path | Primary purpose | Credential model | Best question |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSM | Learn Scrum Master foundations through an approved course | Scrum Alliance certification path | Do I need a structured entry into the role? |
| PSM II | Validate advanced Scrum Master knowledge and application | Scrum.org assessment-based certification | Can I demonstrate advanced Scrum judgment? |
| ICP-ACC | Develop professional Agile coaching and team-coaching foundations | ICAgile accredited learning and provider assessment | Do I need stronger coaching capability? |
| Expert Scrum Master | Build applied practice, responsible AI workflows and career evidence | AgileSeekers program certificate and reviewed deliverables | Do I need workplace practice and a portfolio? |
Choose CSM when you need a reliable beginning
CSM is suitable for people entering Scrum Master work or formalizing experience learned informally. A live Certified ScrumMaster course gives learners shared language, guided discussion and a recognized foundation. It is not intended to prove years of advanced practice.
Choose PSM II when assessment matters
Scrum.org describes PSM II as validation of advanced Scrum knowledge and the ability to support Scrum Teams in complex situations. Its current published assessment details include 30 questions, 90 minutes and an 85 percent passing score. Training is recommended but is not a prerequisite for attempting the assessment.
PSM II fits an experienced practitioner who studies Scrum deeply and wants an independent assessment. It does not by itself provide observed coaching practice or a workplace portfolio.
Choose ICP-ACC when coaching is the capability gap
ICP-ACC moves beyond the Scrum framework into coaching stance, agreements, listening, questions, team development and the deliberate use of teaching, mentoring and facilitation. The AgileSeekers ICP-ACC course is a better choice when difficult human conversations are limiting your effectiveness more than Scrum knowledge.
Choose the Expert Scrum Master program for applied breadth
The Expert Scrum Master Career Accelerator is an AgileSeekers program rather than a substitute for an external Scrum or ICAgile credential. Its value sits in integrated practice: advanced facilitation, team coaching, flow evidence, stakeholder work, responsible AI and reviewed career deliverables.
This route fits someone who already has foundations but lacks a coherent way to practise, receive feedback and turn experience into credible case studies.
Useful combinations
- New Scrum Master: CSM or PSM I first, then real team practice.
- Experienced Scrum Master who wants assessment: PSM II preparation and assessment.
- Scrum Master moving into coaching: ICP-ACC plus a deliberate coaching practice log.
- Practitioner preparing for a broader role: Expert Scrum Master portfolio work alongside the credential that employers in the target market recognize.
Do not collect all four by default
Stacking credentials can become avoidance. If you cannot explain what changed in your facilitation, coaching, flow decisions or stakeholder conversations after the last course, another certificate may not be the next move.
A better test is to inspect three recent situations. Where did you lack knowledge? Where did you lack skill under pressure? Where did you lack evidence for an interview? The answers point to different paths.
How to explain the choice to an employer
Name the capability and the evidence. For PSM II, discuss the advanced Scrum situations you can reason through. For ICP-ACC, describe a coaching conversation and the feedback you received. For the Expert Scrum Master program, show a facilitation design, flow diagnostic or responsible AI agreement. Employers can assess specific work more readily than a row of unexplained acronyms.
The decision in one sentence
Use CSM for foundation, PSM II for advanced Scrum assessment, ICP-ACC for coaching capability, and Expert Scrum Master for integrated workplace practice and career evidence. Choose the missing capability, then apply it before adding another badge.
